Merry “Xmas!”

Did that bother you? This is the time of the year where there is a great paradox between the celebration of a 2,000 year old event, and the way I live my life today. It’s a paradox between a religious figure and a religion that I may not be practicing. It’s a paradox between the birth of Christ, and Christ in me.

Did you know that Christmas is on December 25th? Of course you did. Did you know that for some Christmas is actually 12 days long and is the time between the birth of Christ and Epiphany (When the wise men showed up)? Maybe you did, or maybe not. Did you know that this wonderful time of year that we are in is actually called Advent? Well, I sure hope you did, but unfortunately for most of us we sing songs like It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas and we just skip over what is really happening.

Today is Thanksgiving (well, not anymore - I started this a few days ago!). I'm currently sitting at my soon-to-be Aunt & Uncle's house. The turkey is cooking, the sides are coming together, and my dessert, well let's just say, that was a major Pinterest fail. Thank God for frozen pies! smiley

I'm going to be honest.  Writing on this blog is not high on the list of things I want to be doing right now.  I'm sick.  My body is tired.  This week has been crazy! As I write, I am wrapped in my hideous purple robe.  (Yet, it is so comfortable I will never get rid of it.)  I can't breathe through my nose.  Everything hurts.  I am counting the minutes until I can crawl into bed and turn out the light.

What a journey that God has allowed me to be a part of thus far. First off, I thank God for his abounding grace in my "dysfunctional" life growing up and even now. Being a husband, a father and a Youth Pastor, He just continues to shower me with it on a daily basis and it has never been more astounding to me at the season of my life that I'm in now. I give Him ALL praise and glory for everthing.

Being the age that I'm at today, I'm constantly reminded in the bible how I need to remember the days God has given me thus far, and the days ahead.

More on that in a bit.

Though I have not yet reached a season of parenthood in my 24 years of life, I am well aware of the desire within every child to imitate a parent.  As a young girl, I loved playing "office" with my younger sister.  I remember rearranging our entire bedroom to look like an office, and I would sit at an ironing board (which I proudly called my desk), answering phone calls, filing important documents, and going on frequent lunch breaks.  I loved pretending like I was a secretary, and felt very important as I typed on my super high-tech keyboard from the 90's.

One of my friends in high school, Mickey, was really in to punk music. Not the mainstream punk like Green Day, Blink 182, and Rancid. He loved underground, no label, raw punk. One such band was Skinny Puppy. I remember the day he came into the class completely depressed. "Skinny Puppy sold out", he told me. They had signed with a major corporate label. They were sell out's. As far as Mickey was concerned, they were just in it for the money now. They gave up everything they represented for fame and money. And I have a confession... I'm a sell out too.

Grace and I made a recent decision to leave "IT". It was a difficult decision, but we felt like it was "time".

This morning I went on a run. I wanted to enjoy the beautiful crisp morning here in Colorado, and running is something that has become therapeutic for me.
